Radio astronomy and other scientific exploration of space
Scientific exploration of outer space, whether from earth or from space itself, raises its own sets of legal and policy questions – whether it is conducted on a purely national basis, or in the context of broad international cooperation. For example, to what extent can radio astronomy enjoy protection under the regime of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)? Or: how can the interests of (international) scientific exploration of the moon or celestial bodies be balanced with commercial interests in resource exploitation on celestial bodies? Establishing clarity as regards such questions can make a major difference when it comes to the feasibility of scientific or other exploration – as well as the feasibility of commercial or other activities potentially interfering with it!
